LEARNING TO LOVE YOUR OWN COMPANY

I was reading a wonderful post from Joana about her recent solo trip to London and I was inspired by her independence to follow her dream. We can't wait for other people or let fear hold us back from  doing the things we want to do, even if it means going it alone.

"Love yourself first, so you know what you deserve."

I never used to like being alone. I liked being around people and keeping myself occupied and busy, I didn't want to feel or be lonely. Growing up and gaining more self confidence, I began to enjoy my own company and really appreciate those moments of solitude. I like being alone with my thoughts, not having to answer to anyone or that feeling of having to please other people. Here are some thoughts on learning to love your own company because being alone doesn't mean being lonely!

EXPLORE YOUR INTERESTS

It's fun to do activities with friends but when we do things alone we find out the things we really like to do. There's less pressure to keep up with other people and you can discover different things you like doing in your own time. It's only when we explore places and things by ourselves, we truly find what interests and delights us.

BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND

Being your own best friend, I feel is the best relationship you can have. When we respect and enjoy our own company, we learn about our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes. Whether you're single or in a relationship, accepting who you are, flaws and all makes us open minded and we let people in out of love not loneliness. Don't wait for other people to validate your life, start doing it yourself and you'll build on your self love.

BE INDEPENDENT

I was single for a long time before being in my current relationship. You don't have that ready made support system from a significant other. You learn to grow, do things alone and stand on your own two feet. Being in a relationship now, I still remain independent and enjoy pursuing my own interests by myself. Of course I know Hang will be there for me but I know I can be strong on my own too. With growing independence, we become more self sufficient and aware of our surroundings. I go to events alone even though I'm a bit nervous but it's always nice to meet other people once I'm there. You don't need to rely on a plus one to enjoy yourself!

HAPPY RITUALS

There are so many things that are nice to do alone, that morning coffee, going for a run or meditating. I love waking up and making breakfast, enjoying those quiet moments of the day to gather my thoughts. It's nice not to talk and just be quiet, calm and content with myself. Finding rituals that you enjoy doing alone makes us appreciate our own company and the simple pleasures in life.

"You only grow, when your alone."

Of course there are moments in life where we do feel lonely, bored even and don't have someone to talk or turn too. Let your mind and body heal if you're feeling down, overcoming those moments of weakness makes us stronger but don't let it become who you are. Just because other people look like they're having fun and have big groups of friends, doesn't mean they're more content than you. Have you ever had that feeling where you're in a room full of people and can still feel alone? It's down to how you're feeling inside, when we learn to be content with ourselves we don't need to rely so much on the company of others to make us happy.

I hope this post has inspired you to appreciate your own company more! So if you want to visit a new country, see a show or eat at a restaurant alone - take your time and enjoy it. Life's too short to miss out on the things we want to do :)
